An overview of the causes and effects of the growth of the Black middle class in post-civil rights movement America, with an emphasis on struggles of racial identity and racial inequality. “The phenomenal growth of the Black middle class in the past twenty years has created a tremendous need for further in-depth study. Numerous theories already exist about Blacks’ status in American society that attribute their successes (or lack thereof) to race or class. Yet when focusing on the Black family, one must also examine the Black middle class within this framework.”
